Sleep Party People

Danish post-rock lofi band. The Guardian has written an article about their 2nd new album, which recalled my first experience of listening to them a while back before I discovered the joys of venturing out 4 times a week on a slack uni schedule. Understandably they have some more upbeat new stuff but I can't help but to circle old territory - in this video I am drawn into their movements consequently reassuring my liking of this seasoned track despite perceiving the branded bunny masks a little outdated (think The Knife). They will be playing White Heat in Soho, April 17th.

Give a Helping Hand to 2012!

Happy New Year!!!

To start the New Year in style why not cleanse those hangover legacies and 'returning to work' blues by investing in some decent charitable merchandise for your new January wardrobe.

The advertising house that is Mother, has come up with a nifty idea to sell a limited amount of T-shirts with predictive, psychic slogans that remain unbeknowst to the purchasers until delivery. For £100 you can get your paws on one of these tees of the future, being comforted by the fact that 100% of the revenue goes to Age UK, despite any fortune told! Make the rising fuel prices and fixed pension incomes bearable for someone today.

Broken Social Scene Tee Above
As I love Canadian indie bands and their origins, I could not help but blog about the Montreal based, non-profitable charitable scheme that is The Yellow Bird Project. Catching various musicians they ask them to design a T-shirt for a charity of their choice with the likes of Broken Social Scene, Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, and Bon Iver having graced this tradition in the past.

Leeds Love: J Brewski

Three days ago, me and some friends went out to a birthday outing in Leeds. As it turned out eventually after much drink and dance, all eight of us managed to get the taxi driver to hook up an ipod of ours and play Drake blaring from the vehicle. It was a surreal incident as Jermaine who sat at the front looked uncannily like the Canadian recording artist, on point with every word of 'Best I Ever Had'. Only having checked up his videos today, I have a new found respect for Jermaine (or J Brewski). Despite having a minor despute with the London brai, I definately think his lyrics could give Drake a run for his money.

Someone give this young talent some money to fund a catchy chorus and make a fly video that will rake the pea in please.

How to Dress Well

Turn the volume low to medium.

Low-fi RnB never sounded so right.

Labyrinth Ear

Met once in a blur, but facebook has kept me updated with Emily Jacobs' pursuits. AND HOW GLAD I AM. Here is her band Labyrinth Ear with her partner in crime Tom Evans .
Subtle voice with looped samples celebrates a nostalgic retro tinged form of electro synth at its most alluring. Softer Lykke Li tones perhaps with a beat reminiscent of The Knife and better than the Golden Filter for me. Oak EP can be downloaded for free from their website below:

Mixed up Aussies

So ModularPeople used to be a favourite site to download a good pre-outing podcast about 3 years ago. Well despite nu rave and fluorescent sticks being phased out, I think to myself in the aftermath of Christmas Day - why not? Lets see whether the Aussie Modcasts can mix-mend some of the fluffy electro bands they have signed on their label. I'll be back to blog.

An Example:
I was okay with this track below until roughly 2 minutes in. Why go lighter when you could've gone darker? I'm not a full on lo-fi or dub lover . . . maybe I just like a bit of bass who knows!

The Nocturnal Suite

I found this album, released Nov. 2009 I know I'm late for the boat. However appealing to my Junior Boys days, I really enjoyed this album from its earlier indie sounds to its later minimal synth explorations. Listen to the entirety of its preview tracks on Amazon for sure (although I'm not under the assumption you'll love it, screw track 13 for me, but I think there could be something for anyone):

This is a live video from one of the bands on the album:

AND heres the mans official page:

And please check out this Leeds based band
Loose Talk Cost Lives.
Despite the name, they sound nothing like the BeeGees,
this track emulating a sound that better recalls Fool's Gold.

Leeds Love: Sketches

Last Friday, I had a midnight deadline for an essay on Conceptual Art. My housemates pre-empting my freedom had already cracked open a bottle and were giggling in the livingroom. Little did I know in the last minutes of bibliography bashing that perhaps it wasn't the sounds of liquid intoxication, but the presence of our friend Felix and his guest Luke, the lead vocalist of Sketches . . .

The next evening I went to see him play at The Brudenell Social and frankly I was embarassed. They were so amazingly polished off as an act, that I was ashamed soberness did not previal on my part the previous night. Primarily for me as a complete music review novice and chancer, it was the vocalist's siren-like clarity to coarser tones and the kickass energy of the drummer that sold it (although this could be completely biased as later I met John and he was equally a pleasant chap too). Lovelorn alternative rock, flashback to my teens.

Next show on the 20th November at No Bones night, Nation of Shopkeepers, Leeds, West Yorkshire.

And I hope that the band themselves will never read this, ever.

Javelin

Whilst in New York I went to Brooklyn Bowl to see Javelin. Covers of hip hop tunes as well as they're own produced favourites, this terrible twosome were Amazing to watch live.
